Protox appoints Dr. James Miller to its Board of Directors
Thursday, November 24, 2005 - Vancouver, British Columbia - Protox Therapeutics
Inc. announced today that it has appointed Dr. James Miller to its Board of
Directors. Dr. Miller is the Managing Partner of NDI Capital Inc., which manages
the NeuroDiscovery Limited Partnership, an institutional-backed venture capital
company, as well as serving as the Chief Technical Advisor for the Pender
NDI Life Sciences Fund.
Dr. Miller brings substantial experience and expertise to the Board
of Protox that I expect will be of significant value as we execute on our
near term and longer term strategic plans, stated Frank Holler, Chairman
of Protox. Dr. Miller is an experienced entrepreneur and financier who
understands the process of building globally competitive life sciences companies
and we look forward to his active involvement.
Dr. Miller was a founding shareholder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive
Officer of QLT Inc. (1981-1991), one of the leading biopharmaceutical companies
in North America. He also founded Inex Pharmaceuticals Corporation in 1992
and was its former President and Chief Executive Officer (1992-1999), and,
until 2001, the Chairman.
In addition, Dr. Miller is or has been a director of a number of other private
and public companies, including StressGen Biotechnologies Corp., Chromos Molecular
Systems Inc., Medical Ventures Corp., Allon Therapeutics Inc., NeuroMed Technologies
Inc. and Gateway Income Trust.
Dr. Miller was formerly a Professor, Faculty of Medicine, at the University
of British Columbia, and a Scholar of the Medical Research Council of Canada.
Dr. Miller received an M.A. in Psychology in 1967 and a Ph.D. in Physiology
in 1972 from the University of Western Ontario.
About Protox Therapeutics
Protox Therapeutics Inc. is developing novel targeted cancer therapeutics
based on engineered protein toxins. Its lead programme (PORxin) is based
on pore forming protoxins such as modified proaerolysin. PORxins
are inactive pro-drugs that are preferentially activated at the tumour site
into potent toxins by cancer specific proteases, thereby causing cancer cell
death. The Company works in partnership with research groups at the University
of Victoria, Johns Hopkins University, Scott & White Hospital and other
research institutions. The Companys lead candidate, PORxin302
is being developed for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The Company
anticipates that it will be ready to file an Investigational New Drug application
with the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America in Q4
2005 for approval to initiate a Phase I safety study with PORxin302.
